  • Conservation in Puerto Libre, Ecuador

Travel Journal from Ecuador Puerto Libre, Ecuador | Mon Aug 16, 2010 | Views: 6449

A brief but detailed account of our time in Puerto Libre On our arrival into Puerto Libre we were made to feel extremely welcome and at home in the small community.  We did not commence our work straight away, but were allowed a few days to be shown around Puerto Libre and surrounding areas. We were educated on the region and the reasons for our work here. We were shown …

The Galapagos Islands lie about 1000 miles off the coast of Ecuador in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The Archipelago is made up of 19 islands. Only five of the islands are inhabited by people. Travel Journal from Syria Syria | Mon Aug 31, 2009 | Views: 21081

A couple weeks ago I talked a bit about the origin of the English word "thug".  I want to again take apart a word that we use quite frequently (although hopefully not TOO often) that also has its roots in an older "gang".  The words "assassinate" and "assassin" are derived from a group operating in the Near and Middle East throughout the Crusades, reaching their peak during the Third Crusade. The …

The convenient location and hospitable staff at the Patria hostel allowed me to feel comfortable and safe during my stay.  Every morning we would go downstairs to the neighboring restaurant for a breakfast of cheese, bread, jelly, yogurt, and tea.  In the evenings, we went to the neighboring convenient store and stocked up on bottled water, chocolate, and other snacks.  Our group shared a set of rooms with a mutual …

  • My work, the people, culture and way of life in Northern Ghana

Travel Journal from Ghana Rural Areas, Ghana | Wed Dec 17, 2008 | Views: 3817

The northern part of the country is very poor. Most peoples main source of income comes from farming. The south is richer in agricultural resources, whereas the drought in the north makes farming more and more difficult. The pplace is so dry. Water is a serious problem, and women carry water on their heads for miles. Old fuel drum is what most people use in their homes to store water. I …

I volunteered in Ecuador for a minimal cost and I could easily see where the money goes and why these organizations need to charge volunteers. When you volunteer through organizations like ELI you are actually contributing to the sustainability of the many local projects they support.
